Final Draft of my
Community Problem Essay

Have you Noticed Changes?
Have you noticed changes in the Dubois Round Up lately? Perhaps you have noticed the design change in the title or maybe the different size and style of the body. Perhaps you’ve seen the different images on the “Church and Restaurant” page. These changes were not done because the old layout was getting boring, or because the paper was lacking the business it once received.  Although some people believe that these changes were done for the best, they actually were done out of jealousy.  The changes were done simply because an individual, the President of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, was jealous and believed that someone new needed to be in charge of the Dubois Round Up newsletter. The President is jealous of the Treasurer because of her accomplishments she has achieved while running the Dubois Round Up for thirty years.
This article is to help locals and other Auxiliary members to understand the situation that the Round Up has been put into by the President of the Ladies Auxiliary, and to let the community know that unethical for the State Executive Committee of the Ladies Auxiliary and the President to interfear with the operation of the Round Up.
For those of you who do not know how the Round Up came about, here is a little background information. About thirty years ago the Dubois National Bank ran the Dubois Round Up. The bank decided to do away with the Round Up altogether. Instead of discontinuing it, Mary A. Merry, who lives in Dubois and was interested, took it over, made some adjustments and moved it to the VFW.  Shortly afterwards, Mary became Treasurer. I have witnessed first hand how much hard work and dedication the Treasurer has put into the Dubois Round Up, as many locals call it, to make it as successful as it is today.
The President of the Ladies Auxiliary has been in office for four years now and is also its’ county president.  She wants to have total control of all the funds and programs that go on within the Auxiliary.  She feels that she can run the Round Up better than the Treasurer, who has been publishing the Round Up since the 1970’s. I know this because she has expressed her emotions about this topic to many people in the Auxiliary.  The President has expressed to some of friends of mine that she thinks the Treasurer doesn’t know what she is doing and that she, herself, could do better.
In May of 2001, even though the Round Up seemed to be running smoothly to many locals, it really had some problems in the background that many locals and other Auxiliary members were not aware of.  Approximately six months ago, verbal assaults were launched by a few women in the local chapter of the Ladies Auxiliary toward the Treasurer.  She was accused of not being a good Treasurer and not knowing what she is talking about.  They told her that her treasurer reports were incorrect, even though they were right on the money.  Today, many members of the Auxiliary feel that the origin of these hateful words descended directly from greed these women feel about the respect the Treasurer has received due to her works with the Round Up.
The accusers brought the State Executive Committee of the Ladies Auxiliary to Dubois to discuss what was to be done with the Round Up. The committee decided to do away with the entire newsletter altogether. The Treasurer was pretty upset when this decision was made, but not nearly as upset as when the next event happened.
Because the State Executive Committee decided to demolish the Dubois Round Up, the Treasurer believed that it was gone; all her hard work went down the drain. It turns out that the women in the local chapter of the Ladies Auxiliary made the decision regardless of the State Committee’s ruling to revise the Round Up to their liking and distribute it themselves. This really upset the Treasurer, as well as some of the locals that knew what was going on.  The Treasurer feels that as though all those years of dedicated and volunteer work had been for nothing.
This problem needs to be recognized by the rest of the town as well as by the rest of the Auxiliary members that are not aware of the situation. It’s not just a problem within the Auxiliary; it’s a problem within the community as well.  As time goes by and the President of the Ladies Auxiliary is running the Round Up, everything that has been achieved by this time is being thrown away. The funds that the volunteer newsletter has earned are now decreasing drastically.  Since the President of the Auxiliary has been running the newsletter, the funds are decreasing; therefore, eventually there will be no Round Up, many community members will be disappointed. Many depend on the Round Up to tell them what the local news is and what events are going on in the town. As a result, the Dubois Round Up needs someone in charge who knows money management and how the paper needs to be run so that it is only dependent on itself and not on other organizations.

Since the ladies of the local Auxiliary abided only by the rules they felt necessary, it has destroyed everything that the Treasurer has achieved. I propose that the community petitions the state level of the Ladies VFW Auxiliary to allow the Treasurer to take her place back as the director of the Dubois Round Up; or to at least allow the Treasurer to take part in the actions of the Dubois Round Up.
