Malmstrom AFB Minuteman Missile Site Coordinates

Malmstrom Air Force Base, located in western Montana on the edge of Great Falls, initially had 150 Minuteman I missiles. These were in place by the mid-1960s, and were upgraded to Minuteman II by April 22 1967 (though another source, the book "From Snark to Peacekeeper" suggests conversion was completed May 30 1969). At the same time, 50 more silos were constructed as Minuteman II sites which were upgraded to Minuteman III around 1975 (completed July 8 1975). The 150 older sites were then upgraded to Minuteman III between 1991 and 1997. By August of 2008 the 50 original Minuteman II sites were retired for budgetary reasons. Malmstrom thus has 150 Minuteman III missiles.

Because of the strange mix of construction, flights A through O follow "Boeing" numbering, cycling from 1 to 11 over and over, while the retired flights P through T followed "Sylvania" numbering from 1 to 50 except the MAFs are always site zero. Further, the first 150 LFs appear to be laid out as a sort of mirror image from others in that the silo is on the east side of center, while the last 50 are more conventional with the silo on the west side of center. It appears the last 50 are more closely spaced, as well. Another oddity is that the northeast corner of the last 50 LFs is chopped off.

The people: Malmstrom's Minuteman missiles are overseen by the 341st Missile Wing (see http://www.afhra.af.mil/factsheets/factsheet.asp?id=15009) which includes the 10th MS, 12th MS, 490th MS, 564th MS (inactivated), and many others. The 341st was activated on July 15 1961, just three weeks after it was inactivated as a B-47 bomber unit.

Malmstrom's web site has sections for the various units, see http://www.malmstrom.af.mil/units.

On January 26, 2007, it became apparent that the 564th's sites may be retired. These are the ones originally built for Minuteman II and are thus considerably different from the rest and therefore create additional costs. This was explained in an article from the Associated Press, available on the Air Force's AIM Points web site, here ("Malmstrom Air Base missiles targeted"). And it's discussed briefly in http://www.afa.org/magazine/june2007/0607minuteman.ASP (link died, try http://web.archive.org/web/20080121095915/http://www.afa.org/magazine/june2007/0607minuteman.ASP "Making It Without a Minuteman IV"). On July 1, 2007, it was confirmed that these missiles will in fact be retired: http://billingsgazette.com/news/state-and-regional/montana/article_82ee8f63-1034-5e2f-8d41-5001cdeadef4.html "Missile stockpile to decrease at Malmstrom Air Force Base". An article on the inactivation is at http://www.afmissileers.org/newsletters/NL2008/Sep08.pdf.

I understand that Malmstrom's runway has been closed but is still maintained. Helicopter operations continue, which are required by the missile sites.

MSR Maps was initially awful for Montana. There were far more places with no photos than other parts of the US. Remember, they promised complete photo coverage by the end of 2001. Even USGS was bad, in that many of the topo maps were provisional rather than final. It's as though they just discovered Montana exists. By 2003 things were slightly better; by 2004 they finally seemed to have photos of most sites. And in 2012 Microsoft shut down MSR Maps.

Flights are denoted by a letter of the alphabet followed by a number, with the first in each flight being the Missile Alert Facility (MAF) which consists of an above-ground structure plus an underground Launch Control Center (LCC) staffed by two people. The Launch Facilities (LFs, i.e. missile silos) are connected to the MAF/LCC by hardened cable systems. The first 15 flights are denoted by a letter of the alphabet followed by 1 through 11, with #1 being the Missile Alert Facility (MAF). The 5 remaining flights all use number zero for the MAF, and numbers from 1 to 50 for the LFs. The Launch Facilities (LFs, i.e. missile silos) are connected to the MAF/LCC by hardened cable systems. For humor, I also include the nicknames given in Nuclear Heartland.

This looks like it was quite a construction project, with a large cut on the south side, and part of the facility was put on the other side of the highway. A-1 was the first Minuteman LCC activated, in time to be available during the Cuban Missile Crisis in late 1962.

Nuclear Heartland is trivially incorrect, it says the MAF is on the right going east but it's on the left. Their map has the same error.

It looks to me like the Nuclear Heartland directions are slightly incorrect. After driving west from Dutton, turn right one mile then left .8 mile.

Training Silo
This is the training silo, designated T-9. I wonder how they dealt with the differences between the silos originally built for Minuteman I and the silos built for Minuteman II, since they are laid out differently, but that's a moot point since all the built-for-Minuteman-II sites are retired. At least for gates, this trainer has two entrances on the south side for this reason, for a grand total of five gates!
