What is CALFUN?

CALFUN is a collection of computer programs that CALculate the FUNctional lower developmental threshold of insects from field-collected data. It does this using nonlinear regression and numerical techniques. Several years of field- collected data are needed before CALFUN can be run. These consist of temperature files (daily maximum and minimum temperatures), with one file being created for each year of the field study. For each year of the study, the scientist visits a site where the insect is known to occur and observes the population for the phenological event of interest (i.e., date of first emergence, 50% emergence, etc.). Daily temperatures are simulatneously recorded, from a pre-determined starting date (say, mid-winter) through the day the phenological event occurred. Once a "sufficient" number of years of data are thus collected, CALFUN can be run. CALFUN will provide to you estimates of the insect's lower developmental threshold and thermal constant.

Before You Download CALFUN....

  • You will need a copy of WINZIP to extract the program and data files
  • You will need to decide on the drive and subdirectory in which to place the program and data files

  • Before You can Run CALFUN....

  • You will need to extract the program and data files (do this with WINZIP)
  • You will need to open a DOS window (CALFUN runs from the command line)

  • To Download CALFUN....

  • There are 19 executable files in CALFUN
  • I have also provided to you six practice data files
  • Practice data filenames are WARM.1, WARM.2, WARM.3, COLD.1, COLD.2, COLD.3
  • Click here to download the compressed file, calfun21.zip

  • To Run CALFUN....

  • Within Windows: RUN calfun.exe
  • Within the DOS window: change directories so you are in the subdirectory that contains CALFUN, then type calfun.exe and press the enter key
